This issues-focused seminar is uniquely structured to be relevant for all police employees. It is a highly practical exercise in reinforcing the moral and ethical duties associated with police work.

 

CONTENTS

The seminar is comprised of three, eight-hour sessions as follows:

  • Ethical Decisions:This day describes how moral issues are embedded in most aspects of decision making; what can be done to build and maintain an ethical work culture; how to make courageous choices; and how to construct and apply a values driven compliance program.
  • Ethical Dilemmas: This module provides the participants with an action-oriented set of case studies that demonstrate the use of principled reasoning. It affords everyone the opportunity to view their professional life in light of six pillars of character. Techniques for identifying and avoiding typical ethical lapses will be discussed. This discussion will encompass achievable standards, code of silence, and various definitions of job harassment and discrimination.
  • Legal and Ethical Violations: The final session probes the consequences of mistakes of the heart vs. mistakes of the mind.? This day, instructed by an attorney with over 20 years of experience, concentrates on how police personnel can avoid problems and defend themselves when ethical challenges arise.
